Once forgotten soldiers
Now lined row upon row
Eternally static
Standing at attention.
Gathering dust
Robbed of function
Reduced to objects of interest
A silent witness of long dead patrons.
Stories to tell
Of secret trysts
And wedding nights.
Witnesses to happy anniversaries
And birthday celebrations
Mourners of a relationship’s demise.
Yet sill pleasing to the eye
Though decades have flown
Arranged with care
Decoration replaces function.
Patrons inquire
The original keys
1912 Adolphus Hotel
Dallas, Texas.
Barely discernible room numbers
Etched in the worn brass
The only visible relief to the sameness.
Another casualty of technology
Expendable
A neglected relic.
Resurrected from a dusty box
Repurposed,
Not forgotten after all.

What happens when we lose our purpose? When we stumble and fumble and forget?
When our function gets lost in the quest toward worldly perfection… When our wants eclipse our needs…
And we become so wrapped up in ourselves that we forget the whole world crying out around us.
And we the ones with the answer.
Like keys that look pretty but are empty and devoid of use.
Just something interesting to look at–to wonder about in a fleeting thought–
and to forget as easily.

Ephesians 2:10- For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
– Are you serving your purpose?
-Sometimes we find ourselves adrift. What good work can you become involved in– if you need to refocus your life?
