Obsession: Choosing To Open Your Eyes

Ok here’s the deal, I’m obsessed. Especially after multiple incidences. Now don’t jump to conclusions. There are many different kinds of obsessions.

My obsession is not life-threatening

Or family severing.

It’s rather benign in fact.

The only dangerous part of this obsession is the car swerving and lane jumping to the closest exit. Or the need to drive faster to make the nearest clear view—

Before it’s too late.

Before the intensity is gone.

Before the light dims.

As you know, I have promised myself I will open my eyes more, slow my pace more and enjoy God’s world— painted and planted for me.

In the summer it seems to be perfectly timed on my twenty-minute drive home from church. Winking, and teasing, it beckons me. I have no more power to resist than I do the piece of dark chocolate sitting in front of me.

Little did I know that I would become so enamored with His beauty that I could become a little reckless, a little distracted.

I’m sure the cars on the expressway wonder what my rush is as I zoom by. I’m sure some are shaking their heads. It seems I forget to notice until I’m near that exit and then have to dive for it.

But as I pull into the lot, park along the lake, and sit on my hood aside numerous other devotees, I feel the weight fall away.

Breathe it in,

Breathe deeply.

My heart-rate slows, my mind calms.

The purple water-color clouds open to a burst of orange zest,

Piercing the heavens

And illuminating the still waters.

Slowly intensifying—

I am mesmerized and enthralled.

I relax into the ink beginning to creep across the sky.

The colors fade to a soft glow,

I exhale

I am whole again.

Neh 9:6 You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

-When is the last time nature took your breath away?

-Remember to thank God for the resplendent beauty, but don’t forget the small things too.
