Rwanda: My Trip Gets Off to a Rough Start

We loved Turkish Airlines--Who knew? Thank you Lord

We loved Turkish Airlines–Who knew? Thank you Lord

How can a flight just cancel out of thin air?

No snowstorm,

No ice,

No mechanical problems,

Just an email notice blaring.

I should have checked sooner I guess. But with the rush to get off on time, I thought,

“I have thirty minutes travel time to look while The Preacher drives over to pick up my local son.”

I expected to find maybe an update on the departure time, not a complete cancelation with this notation: Flight crew unavailable.

WHAT???

This was not just a flight to Dallas— easily remedied, it was our connection to Brussels, then on to Africa.

My heart began to pound.

I called our travel agent to update her. She told us to keep heading to the airport and get in line while she tried to get through. She warned us that it may take a while to connect with the airline on a cancellation because everyone else would be in a panic too.

“I can deal with a later flight. We have a five hour layover in Washington DC. Surely they can get us on something.”

But there was nothing.

All flights sold out.

The sinking feeling permeates. Not only are we supposed to be in Washington that afternoon, we were to meet my other son. He flew early from California and was already half-way there.

The plan was to meet up in DC and fly United Air overseas together.

Not happening.

No how

No way.

The travel agent had a solution.

It was not what we expected,

It was not what we ultimately preferred,

But it would at least get us there, though five hours later than the Washington route.

I made the call to the one who fortunately was a seasoned world traveller.

“Son, see you in Rwanda. We are headed to Istanbul on Turkish Air.” Turkish Air???

Days like this remind me how little control I have over life. I think I’m in the drivers seat—everything planned down to the tiniest detail and Bam, one cancellation, one forgotten meeting, one illness, one accident and I’m in a tailspin.

By grasping desperately for some kind of control, forgetting to pray, forgetting who is really in charge here—WHAT AM I SAYING TO GOD?

Am I saying— I don’t trust you to lead my life and lay the path before me?

Am I saying— I know what’s best for me, not you?

Am I really saying— It’s all about me. I’ll fit you in as I can?

(Which by the way we ended up loving Turkish Air–two hot meals, snacks, a toiletry bag with toothbrush and paste, and slippers handed out!!) Thank you Lord!

Isa 14:24 NASB Surely just as I have intended so it has happened and just as I have planned so it will stand. GOD
