Runnaway Bride

Shoe shopping success for my mother of the groom attire! Wedding shoes, rehearsal dinner shoes, oh and those cute blue leather wedges on sale that I just “needed”.

Maybe I got a little carried away? It’s probably a blessing that I have skinny feet, and only about one pair in ten actually fit.

Arms laden, as I prepared to cross the busy parking lot, I saw a blur of white.

I had to look twice. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

Crossing the lot in front of me, zipping between cars as they slowed for her, was a bride.

I guess she was a bride. She was running across the street from the bridal store. And she was in full wedding regalia, with an older woman, ( her mother?), trailing behind.

The satin bodice with a sweetheart neckline, fit her perfectly. Out of it flowed a long Disney princess skirt. Elegant and lovely, yet she ran, with great handfuls of tulle lifted high to keep from stumbling.

I stared perplexed.

Others stopped to gape.

Why in the world would someone leave the store wearing their dress? And not only wearing it, but running in it? Hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars were dashing by.

The possibilities flooded my mind:
Did she suddenly decide today to get married and needed a dress?

Did she procrastinate so long in selecting her dress that the alterations were only finished today, her wedding day?

Was it late in being shipped?

Was the tailor late in finishing the corrections?

Had she slipped into her dress at the church, only to find her size changed so much from her last fitting that she had to return for last minute alterations?

Were people waiting, fidgeting, at the church, nervously hoping for the bride to appear?

Was the groom pacing and sweating?

Like God waiting for us– waiting at the church– waiting at our heart’s door– hoping we will show up.

He doesn’t mind if we only decided to come him today.

He doesn’t mind if we have multiple excuses for being late in our commitment.

He doesn’t mind if we are a different shape than when he first met us.

He is just really glad we came at last.

Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
-Have you been committed to God for a long time? Or are you a newcomer to commitment?
(You can be an old christian and still be new to true commitment.)
-Thank God for his patience and his unwavering commitment to us.
